Being Backward

I’d never heard of the phrase “being backward” until my aunt mentioned it a few years ago.  She told me that she was surprised to see that I was not a backward as I was as a child.  I looked at her with the strangest look.  “Backward?” I said. And she said “you know, backward: shy, quiet.  Backward.”

What a lovely word to describe an introvert!

For most of my young life I have tried to get away from what the world sees as being backward.  From my experiences, being shy and being quiet are definitely viewed as negative traits by the world.  I’d always hoped that one day I would just grow out of my shy and quiet ways, and suddenly emerge as a social butterfly.  Seeing as how that has not happened in my past 21 years of life, I’ve decided it may be time to take a different approach.

Although turning into an extrovert overnight would make my life easier in many ways, I am trying to learn to accept and appreciate my quiet self. And that's what my blog is about. So feel free to come and be backward with meJ
